Today's class was really short because the guest speaker got lost and never showed up. We turned in our exams and Dr. Holben went over the Ohio Board of Dietetics website. The mission of the board is to effectively protect the public by regulating the practice of dietetics through licensure, and by fairly and consistently enforcing the laws and rules governing nutritional practices.” We also talked about the food menu for the family of four that is due next Tuesday.

Nick Claussen the Community Relations Coordinator from the Department of Athens County Jobs and Family Services came to talk to us today about SNAP. He was a very interesting man, really laid back. It is funded by the federal government and monitored to make sure no errors and watching the people who get the benefits. It uses statistical reports to help monitor the program. It is a food assistance program that is designed to raise nutritional levels, to expand buying power and to safeguard the health and well-being of individuals in low-income households in Ohio. SNAP is commonly known to give food stamps but the Athens County Jobs and Family Services gives out a debt card to people who qualify. In order to qualify for food assistance benefits your household's gross monthly income is at or under 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. Some households may qualify if they have income over the limit if someone in the household is elderly or disabled. If the household's income is under the limit or if the limit does not apply, they review the households expenses to determine the monthly benefit amount. They also look at the number of people in your household who purchase and prepare food together. To apply for go online and fill out an application or you can apply in the office. SNAP helps individuals meet up to 75% of that household's needs and helps support their monthly food budget. However it does not cover pet food, alcohol, and tobacco. Alot of the times families run out of money before the end of the month and therefore have to go a local food shelter. The role of the nutrition professional is to remain knowledgeable and help with SNAP benefits. After Nick talked we watched a movie called Farm to School. This was a really interesting video about how grade schools are trying to serve more fruit and vegetables. This is amazing to me and hopefully all schools will be able to have this program and make children's lunches more nutritious.

Today in class we sat in circle and discussed our Agency project's we had to do. It was really cool to hear about the different programs and how they are helping people in need. My agency was called People's Garden. The USDA set up this garden outside where workers of the USDA were able to plant and grow anything they wanted. Now it has spread through the country and they are alot of people's garden where it brings people from the community together and helps supply fruits and vegetables to them. The main idea to start the garden came from Abraham Lincoln which I thought was really amazing.  Everyone discussed their handouts that they made.

April 10

Today we got to watch a video clip of a cartoon about how a bill sits at Capital hill waiting to become a law.We also went over the powerpoint of  the health and nutrition policy and discussed how as Dietitians we may one day have to write a note to the senate. Dr. Holben also went over what things are on the first exam. It seems like alot of essays and will take a long time to complete. Also we talked about eating on $2/day for five days. This seems so hard! Also we meet with our groups and worked on the workbook pages for our final project and decided that everyone will have to find a cited website about what pregnant women need.

April 12

We watched a movie about a farmer's market called Right Choice, Fresh Start. The movie was about the first day the market open and what it took for this to happen. It also benefit the community in several ways, some people even got a $50 voucher. The market was even outside the doctor's office so after their visit the patients could go right to the market. We also dicussed the agency assignment. I have People's Garden which gardens that help out and benefit communities. There are certain characteristics that the garden must have to become part of the People's garden. This is a very interesting project and can't wait to hear about other people's assignments!

April 3

Today in class we met at the garden. We learned where we can get water and where to find the gardening tools. We also where to told to put our compost and our gardening area. We talked as a class about food security in Athens and how the garden only costs about $25 for the summer. This is so cheap and can save families a lot of money on groceries. Then we met in our groups and discussed what age group we were going to plant. We decided to grow crops for pregnant women.

April 5

In class we turned in our three ideas for the group project and three agencies for our agency project. Unfortuantely, Dr. Holben gave me a wild card so I don't have an agency yet. We also met in our groups and talked about what we are going to grow in the garden and when we are going to meet. I think we are going to grow peanuts, spinach, and peppers. Then Dr. Holben finished the powerpoint about food insecurity.

March 29

Today in class we watched two movie clips about food insecurity. The first one was Sarah Brochivich with Julia Roberts. I've never seen the movie but i really want to. And the second one was a 60 minute clip. It was really hard to watch because you don't know how much you have until you see something like this. These clips made me very interested in food security. In the future I would like to get involved in helping those individual's who are suffering from hunger. Also in class we talked about when future projects are due and we were also assigned to our garden groups.
