Today in class Melissa Alfano from WIC came in and talked to us. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program. The people who are eligible are pregnant women, breastfeeding women, postpartum women, infants, and children. They have to follow the income guidelines at or below 185% of US poverty income guidelines, medicaid, they must be a resident of Ohio, and be at nutriton risk. Nutrition risk includes anemia, under/overweight, pregnancy complication, poor pregnancy outcomes, and inappropriate nutrition practices. WIC is funded 100% Federally and operates in all 88 counties. WIC improves pregnancy outcomes, reduces infant mortality, and provides infants and children with a healthy start. It provides nutrtion education, breastfeeding education, supplemental foods, and tickets for farmers makerts. If mother is breastfeeding they get to stay on WIC for 1 year and have more benefits than those who don't breastfeed they only get 6 months. It is monitor by the federal every 2 years and gets evaulated by state dietitian. The rest of class we listen to Cherly Rock about diet and physical activity in cancer preventaion and surviorship.

Today we went to Good Earth farm. This was probably one of my favorite places that we had visited. Paul talked to us about the farm. The Good Earth provides food for to the food pantries for free. It feeds people for free, they have lunch and dinners at their house to feed anyone for free. The grow alot of vegetables, I forget how much but it was alot! Paul also just started growing fruit. They also have cows and sheep. The cows were really fun to watch. When the farm first started it was funded by his wife who is teacher at Hocking college and now if funded more by grants. Paul started the farm with just the idea and wasn't sure how it was going to work out. He wanted the land because of the soil so he just asked the people who live next to them and let him buy it from them. This was a really fun and interesting visit and really taught me alot about farms!
